Man sitting quietly on bed in dark room; woman reading by lamp in adjacent room

You feel it before you can actually name it. That flash of heat that seems to come from nowhere. The wave of tears you can’t explain. And the heavy silence at the dinner table that used to be full of easy conversation. Menopause doesn’t announce itself politely. It arrives like weather — it’s sudden, disorienting, and impossible to control. And for many women, the hardest part isn’t the hot flashes or the sleepless nights. It’s the quiet dread that the person lying next to them no longer recognizes who they’ve become.

When Your Body Feels Like a Stranger’s

For those going through it, menopause touches nearly every system in a woman’s body, and the symptoms rarely arrive one at a time. Those intrusive hot flashes can strike in the middle of a meeting or a family dinner, leaving you flushed and flustered with no warning. Your sleep becomes elusive, broken by night sweats or a racing mind that won’t settle. Hair thins. Skin changes. Joints ache in ways they never did before. And underneath all of it runs an emotional undertow—mood swings that don’t knock on your door but show up without permission and a sudden irritability or a sadness that seems to come from nowhere at all.

Though it may feel like it, none of this makes you broken. You’re moving through a season your body was always going to reach. But knowing that intellectually and feeling it emotionally are two very different things. Some women describe a strange kind of grief during menopause — mourning a version of themselves that feels like it’s slipping away, even while they’re still very much here.

The Marriage Goes Quiet Before It Goes Wrong

Here is what almost no one talks about: menopause doesn’t just change a woman’s body. It can sometimes change your marriage, often without either person noticing until the distance feels enormous.

It rarely happens all at once. It happens in small moments that pile up quietly. Tears blamed on being “just tired.” A night when intimacy feels physically and emotionally impossible, and there aren’t words ready to explain why. One withdrawal doesn’t damage a marriage. But withdrawal after withdrawal, silence after silence, can leave both partners feeling rejected, like strangers in a home they used to share so easily.

This is often the loneliest part of menopause — not the symptoms themselves, but the sense that no one else quite understands what’s happening, including the person who loves you most. Husbands, for their part, are frequently just as lost. They see the changes. They feel the distance. But without the language to understand what their wives are experiencing, many husbands respond with confusion or hurt instead of the compassion they actually want to offer.

Why Naming It Changes Everything

Something powerful happens the moment a couple starts naming what’s actually going on instead of tiptoeing around it. Shame completely loses its grip. Confusion starts to soften into understanding. And a marriage that felt like it was drifting can slowly begin to find its way back to each other.

This is true for the physical symptoms—understanding why hot flashes happen, why sleep disappears, why intimacy can become painful or complicated removes so much unnecessary shame from the experience. But it’s just as true emotionally. When a woman can say “this is what I’m feeling and here’s why,” and a husband can respond with patience instead of confusion, something shifts. Silence stops being the default, and compassion becomes possible again.

Faith often plays a quiet but powerful role in this process too. For many women, menopause becomes a season that forces deeper honesty—with themselves, with their husbands, and with God. Prayer becomes less about performing wellness and more about simply telling the truth about a hard season. And that honesty, as uncomfortable as it can feel at first, tends to be the very thing that opens the door back to connection.

Rebuilding Intimacy, One Honest Conversation at a Time

Intimacy during and after menopause rarely returns the way it left — all at once, exactly as it was before. It tends to return in smaller, more deliberate ways. A conversation that finally happens instead of getting swallowed by silence. A husband asking, gently, what his wife actually needs instead of guessing. A wife finding the courage to say “I’m struggling” instead of “I’m fine.”

None of this requires either partner to have all the answers. It simply requires a willingness to stop pretending everything is normal when it doesn’t feel normal at all. Marriages that move through menopause well aren’t the ones untouched by its challenges—they’re the ones willing to talk about them out loud, with patience for how long that conversation sometimes takes.

You Are Not Losing Yourself

If you’re in the middle of this season right now — staring at the ceiling at 3 a.m., wondering where the woman you used to be has gone, or feeling the quiet ache of distance growing in your marriage — please hear this: you are not crazy, you are not alone, and you are not finished. As disorienting as it feels, it does not have to be the end of your story. It can become the place where your voice returns, where your marriage deepens in ways it never has before, and where your heart learns to rise again.

Christian Fiction for Women

If you’re searching for Christian fiction about spiritual manipulation—stories that are clean, faith-filled, and honest about how people misuse authority—this one’s for you. Let’s talk real life for a second.

Doing Everything Right and Still Feeling Empty

Many of us who grew up in church learned the same script. Go to church. Pray. Stay strong. Smile, even when you don’t feel like it. Honor your elders. Obey the people God put in authority over you—your pastor, your priest—because that’s how you qualified for heaven.

Most of us followed it, not because anyone forced us to, but because we believed it. We wanted to do right by God, by our families, by the people who raised us, and the faith they handed down.

So what do you do when you’ve done all of that, and it still feels like something’s missing?

What happens when the place that should feel like your safe space leaves you feeling unheard, unseen, or quietly unloved?

If you’ve ever sat in a pew and felt more alone than you did at home, you already know there’s no clean answer to that. Just a weight you learn to carry without talking about it much.

That tension drives my book, The Church Girl and the Priest. It’s a story for anyone who’s ever questioned their place, their worth, or their faith—and didn’t know who would let them say that out loud.

This book is also for the person who’s ever sensed something was wrong but couldn’t find the words for it, or didn’t feel it was their place to ask. Maybe you’ve wondered how someone ends up believing they have no choice but to obey, even when it costs them. This book won’t ask you to judge her. It just wants you to finally see her.

Why We Need More Christian Fiction About Spiritual Manipulation

There’s no shortage of books out there. But many skip past the parts that are hard to talk about: the quiet disappointment, the spiritual loneliness, the questions we keep to ourselves because we’re not sure we’re allowed to ask them.

This clean, Christian novel goes there anyway.

It’s not preachy, and it’s not predictable. Instead, it’s honest, layered, and full of redemption—the same way real life is, when we’re willing to look closely.

What The Church Girl and the Priest Is Really About

This isn’t a love story.

It’s about a young church girl and a priest who used his position against her. He was a married man. Something about it never felt right to her, but her family had raised her to believe that obeying her priest wasn’t optional. Her late grandmother taught her that. It was the culture of the day: you didn’t question spiritual authority, especially not if you wanted to qualify for heaven.

The Church Girl & The Priest - A Church Girl & The Priest by Teri M. Bethel - A compelling Christian fiction novel about faith and unexpected manipulations in the church.

He knew that. And he used it.

This book doesn’t shy away from what happens when someone twists spiritual authority into control. It looks honestly at how deeply the culture we grow up in can shape what we believe we must endure, even when everything in us says no.

Through her journey, the book explores:

  • How manipulation can hide behind religious authority
  • Why generations have used “obedience” to silence people
  • How grace can reach the places shame has buried
  • What it takes to find your voice again after someone uses your trust against you

A Question Worth Sitting With

Before you go—here’s something I’d gently ask you to think about, whether or not you ever pick up the book.

Did you ever do something — or avoid doing something — because someone with spiritual authority said you had to? Even when part of you wanted to say no?

Or is there someone in your life whose silence you mistook for consent? Have you ever asked what someone taught them to believe?

Neither question needs an answer today. But if either one stirred something in you, that’s worth paying attention to. Learning to obey isn’t the same as choosing to. And recognizing that, even years later, isn’t disloyalty to your faith. It’s honesty.

That’s really all this story is trying to do—make a little more room for the parts of us, and the people around us, we don’t usually bring to church.

A Story That Makes You Think (and Maybe Cry a Little)

If you’ve ever felt lonely in church, even surrounded by people…

Maybe you did something you didn’t want to do because someone in spiritual authority said you had to…

Or you’ve wanted to understand someone who’s endured manipulation, instead of judging them from a distance…

If you long for Christian fiction that’s real, clean, and redemptive…

I wrote this one with you in mind.

Does your love life seem embattled? Do you ever notice how social media is flooded with posts about love, romance, and perfect moments? While it might seem heartwarming, the truth is that sometimes, a seemingly happy marriage can actually be a facade that masks the harsh reality of a struggling relationship. Beryl and Gregory’s (not their real names) story is one such example. They put on a show of happiness and contentment, but the truth is that their marriage is strained and difficult.

Beryl and Gregory were a couple who seemed to have a perfect marriage, at least to outsiders. However, Beryl had a secret that she struggled to keep hidden. In reality, behind closed doors, Gregory’s selfishness and anger issues had cast a dark shadow over their relationship. This had left Beryl yearning for the intimacy she so desperately desired. Gregory’s threatening and abusive behavior had become routine, and Beryl felt trapped in a loveless marriage. She feared how society would judge her if she chose to admit her dilemma or leave.

The story of Joanie and Ted is one that many couples can relate to. On the surface, they projected an image of happiness, but they struggled behind closed doors. Joanie was abusive towards Ted, taking advantage of his meekness. Her behavior eventually led Ted to seek comfort in another woman who appreciated his worth. Despite Ted leaving her, Joanie continued to post old pictures of herself and Ted on social media, too ashamed that their marriage was over and he had moved out to live with his new girl.

Love’s Facade on Social Media

Sadly, the modern-day display of affection, often showcased on social media, can sometimes be a mere facade, leaving the participants feeling a heavy weight of emptiness that drives them to perform for public acceptance rather than seeking help to restore their relationship. As couples lose touch with the passion that initially brought them together, disagreements replace the spark of excitement. Reflecting on the core elements of a relationship—friendship, respect, communication, laughter, and trust—becomes crucial to rekindling the flames of passion and connection.

Navigating the Highs and Lows of Love’s Battleground

Love is not just a feeling but a decision that requires a willingness to navigate highs and lows together. Love is more than just gifts; it has a deep emotion that requires understanding and commitment. Knowing your spouse’s love language is an excellent way to reignite the spark in your relationship. One of the challenges lies not in just loving each other but in genuinely liking and appreciating one another.

If you feel unfulfilled in your relationships, you may wonder whether you should give more or less of yourself. It’s important to recognize that positive change often involves giving more by showing kindness, being a better listener, and actively engaging in conversations. By appreciating the positive aspects of your partner and vocalizing your admiration, you can bridge the gap and rekindle the connection.

If, on the other hand, you are in a volatile situation that could endanger your life and that of your children, you should consider registering a complaint with your local police department and seeking a safe haven until you work out your differences.

Effective Communication is the Key

It is important to communicate respectfully. This involves listening without distractions, allowing others to share their thoughts, and speaking truth with kindness. These actions can help repair communication breakdowns and create deeper understanding.

Couples considering ending their relationship often experience regrets and “what if” thoughts. However, taking the time to express love, appreciate each other, and create memorable experiences can help dispel these regrets and build a strong foundation for a lasting and genuine relationship.

If you want to strengthen your relationship and make it last, I recommend checking out my book, “My Marriage Matters“. This book offers practical advice and helpful insights for couples who want to rescue their relationship and make it stand the test of time. Instead of focusing on superficial gestures and fleeting moments, let’s celebrate our partners in a genuine way, showing our love not just one day a year but every day. It’s time to be honest with each other about the challenges we face and embrace a love that is authentic, unfiltered, and truly meaningful.
